Tanzania: Towers to House Govt Offices

TANZANIA Building Agency (TBA) has embarked on a special drive to construct government towers in every region which will accommodate offices of the government and its institutions under one roof.
TBA Chief Executive Officer Elius Mwakalinga told reporters that for a start they will take off in Mwanza, Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Mbeya, Lindi and Mtwara regions.
He said that the towers to be constructed at Ujenzi compounds in every region are expected to reduce renting expenditure for the government as renting rates will be more economical compared to the commercial rates currently being charged by private owners.
Mr Mwakalinga said that construction is expected to take off this financial year. He also said that discussions are at an advanced stage with other public institutions that wish to take up the projects. Mwanza Region will be the first, he said. He also said that the government spends a lot of money in paying rents.
Thus, as a building agency they decided to take up the initiative to construct towers which will accommodate offices, residential house and shopping malls at one centre and at cheaper rates.
However, he said, should there be extra spaces in the towers they will availed to private companies, that will have to pay rent at commercial rates.
Mr Elius said the towers will be constructed under the Tunnel form work system technology which has been proved to be a conversional method of construction.
Since the technology needs high sense of discipline, he said, TBA has decided to work in partnership with Tanzania Peoples Defence Forces (TPDF), JKT, Police Force, Tanzania Prisons and the TBA Brigade.
He added that they decided to incorporate the forces since they want to make sure that the technology remains home.
These institutions can continue working even when there are delays in funding and they have a good number of human resources with the needed skills. Should things work out as planned, he said, they expect the project to be completed within two years.
