TANZANIA: BONGO STAR SEARCH FLIES TO ZANZIBAR
HUNDREDS of hopefuls from across the spicy
islands of Zanzibar gathered at Bwawani Hotel for the Epiq Bongo Star
Search (BSS) audition held here over the weekend.
The huge gathering comprised enthusiastic young and middle-aged citizens, all eager to impress a panel of three judges led by Ritta Poulsen. The other judges were Salama Jabir and Joachim Kimaryo 'Master Jay'. The names of the selected performers have been kept secret. The quintet will be announced in the later stages of the annual contest.
Speaking at the end of a grueling vetting event, chief judge Poulsen said she was excited on seeing a big number of motivated youth at the audition.
She said a lot of young boys and girls showed up for the interview filled anticipation as most realized that the contest provided a viable platform that could transform their careers.
"I know people are not coming here just to pass their time, but to try and win a chance to participate in the contest," she said. "Some were here last year and we told them they should improve in some areas, they have done so and this year have excelled." Zantel's chief commercial officer Sajid Khan, said his company was proud to be associated with the Epiq Bongo Star Search, which helps in creating job opportunities for Tanzanian youth.
"More than half of the participants are youth, and no way can the government alone create job opportunities for the entire young generation," Khan said.
