Del Bosque: Xabi Alonso injury 'nothing serious'
Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque has allayed concerns after Xabi Alonso was withdrawn from Saturday's 2-1 win over Equatorial Guinea through injury.
Alonso was replaced by Sergio Busquets just before half-time after
appearing to injure his ankle in a strong tackle from Thierry Fidjeu.
Real Madrid will be most concerned about the midfielder's fitness with his club team-mate Sami Khedira unlikely to return this season after suffering a serious knee injury while playing for Germany on Friday.
But Del Bosque insists he only took Alonso off as a precaution, suggesting the injury is less serious than first feared.
"It's nothing serious, just a knock... Xabi was brought off just as a precaution," he said.
First-half goals to Santi Cazorla and Juanfran were enough to seal a narrow win for La Roja, although Guinea gave Spain somewhat of a scare when Jimmy Bermudez netted an equaliser after 36 minutes.
Despite Del Bosque fielding a largely inexperienced squad from the squad, Alonso aside, the 62-year-old made no excuses for his side's performance.
"It was an awkward match for us," he said. "They were physically strong and did not let us play. We have wanted to play our game, but often we were inhibited.
